Bilateral Relations

Bilateral Relations

Historically, relations between Egypt and Japan date back to the end of the nineteenth century, when one of the samurai missions stopped in Egypt in route to Europe, aiming at determining the manifestations of the Egyptian civilization in 1862, but the official relations between the two countries date back to 1922 when Japan recognized Egypt’s independence and opened its general consulate in Alexandria in 1926, and the opening of an Egyptian general consulate in the city of “Kobe”, closed at the beginning of the Second World War, followed by the opening of the Japanese Embassy in Cairo in 1952 and the Egyptian Embassy in Tokyo in 1953.

The positive development has been the hallmark of the relations between Egypt & Japan, especially since 2015, which witnessed the beginning of taking the bilateral relations to broader horizons, noting that these relations have gained momentum since then. Also the Egyptian government is keen on transferring Japan’s successful experience in various fields, that’s why the Egyptian side aims to increase Japanese business involvement within the Egyptian economy. Finally, it’s important to mention that His Excellency Mr./ Abdelfattah Al Sisi, President of Egypt, visited Japan three times during the past four years, in addition to the visit of His Excellency Mr./ Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of japan, to Egypt in 2015, and also the frequent bilateral visits by high ranking officials from both countries add a significant clue to the special & excellent relations between Egypt & Japan.
